Thursday Night Kirtan: Chantingas Spiritual Practice

In a retreat setting in Boone, North Carolina, a group gathers in the evening to do something that has been done for centuries in temples and ashrams across India: they chant. Not in unison, not with rehearsal, but in the spontaneous, call-and-response form known as kirtan. The room settles. A harmonium—that hand-pumped keyboard instrument with the breathing quality of a living thing—begins to drone. And from that sound, names emerge: sacred invocations, repeated until they dissolve into something beyond language. This is the Thursday Night Satsang, a practice rooted in devotion and grounded in the belief that chanting the names of the divine can open the heart and align consciousness with the infinite.

Kirtan is not performance in the Western sense. It is participatory prayer, a collective act where the singer and the sung-to merge. The accompanying musicians—violin, guitar, drums, bass—are not there to impress but to serve the chant itself, creating a sonic container sturdy enough to hold the vibration of the room. In this session, the band includes Genevie Walker on violin, David Nick on guitar, Nina on cymbals, and Mark Gorman on bass. The lineup itself matters less than what they create together: a living space where the boundary between singer and listener, between performer and participant, begins to blur.

What is kirtan and how does it work as spiritual practice?

Kirtan comes from Sanskrit and means "to praise" or "to tell." In its essence, it is the call-and-response chanting of divine names—most often the names and incarnations of Krishna, Rama, and other figures central to Hindu devotional theology. But the mechanism is not doctrinal. When a room full of people chants the same syllables, the same rhythms, the same invocations over and over, something shifts in the nervous system. The repetition, the harmony, the rhythm together create a state often described as meditation in motion. The chanter is not trying to achieve something or arrive somewhere; the chanting itself is the arrival. The practice bypasses the thinking mind and works directly with the heart.

In this Thursday night session, the chants move through different modes and intensities. Some are spare and meditative, the harmonium drone so subtle it almost becomes the room itself. Others build in energy and urgency, the drums quickening, the voices rising in fervor. One repeated invocation speaks to the "power" of the divine—"go power," "king of all power"—a mantra that works not through intellectual understanding but through sonic resonance. As the chant is repeated, the meaning becomes less important than the vibration itself. The words become a tool, a ladder that the voice climbs until it reaches a place beyond words.

Why does chanting have such a profound effect on consciousness?

The mechanism is partly neurological and partly mysterious. Sound, rhythm, and repetition are known to shift brainwave patterns, move the nervous system out of the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state, and activate the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) response. But there is also something more subtle at work. In many spiritual traditions, sound itself is understood not as mere vibration but as the fabric of creation. In Hindu philosophy, the universe is said to be woven from the primordial sound "Om." From this view, chanting sacred names is not mimicking the divine; it is participating in the divine's own self-expression. The chanter becomes a vehicle through which the sacred speaks itself into being.

During the session, this shift is palpable. The musicians and chanters are not performing for an audience but creating together in a shared intention. The energy in the room builds not through showmanship but through genuine devotion. When everyone in a space is focused on the same invocation, the same sacred name, for an extended period, individual consciousness begins to merge with collective consciousness. The boundaries of the separate self soften. For someone chanting, the experience is often one of coming home—not to a place, but to a state of being where the heart recognizes itself in all things.

How does Bernie's Chalisa fit into the evening's practice?

Toward the end of the session, the focus shifts to a version of the Chalisa—a traditional Hindu prayer text—that Krishna Das calls "Bernie's Chalisa." It was inspired by Bernie Glasman, described as a "great great being" and end master. The Chalisa is a forty-verse devotional poem, usually dedicated to Hanuman, the monkey devotee. But this particular version has been reimagined as a prayer to awakened hearts everywhere, through all of time. It begins not with formal invocation but with direct address: "You who wonder, you who thirst, I offer you this pen. Calling out to hungry hearts everywhere through endless time." The language shifts from ancient Sanskrit to contemporary English, from temple to retreat center, from historical devotion to present-moment awakening.

The Chalisa continues with the image of gathering—"Gather around. Share this meal. Your joy and your sorrow. I'll make you mine." This is devotion reframed as radical inclusion. The sacred is not distant or transcendent alone; it meets you in the sorrow as well as the joy. The chanter is not appealing to a deity outside themselves but calling to something within and beyond, something that recognizes all beings as expressions of the same divine consciousness. The verses build on this theme of connection, compassion, and the awakening that comes through meeting one another in the depths of shared human experience.

What is the significance of closing with a universal wish?

The session concludes with one of the most universally recognized mantras in global spirituality: "Lokah samasta sukhino bhavantu"—may all beings everywhere be happy and at peace. Krishna Das describes it simply: "It's a wish. It's an aspiration. It's a hope. It's a dream that all of us every being in the universe be happy and at peace." There is no sectarian content here, no requirement to believe in any particular theology. The mantra is pure intention, pure compassion. It is a prayer that belongs to every human being, regardless of faith tradition.

As the room joins together in this closing invocation, the earlier chants have prepared the ground. The hearts have been opened, the minds have been quieted, and the boundaries between self and other have begun to dissolve. The simple wish for universal happiness and peace is not sentimental; it emerges from a direct recognition that in the deepest truth, there is only one consciousness experiencing itself through infinite forms. To wish peace for all beings is to wish peace for oneself. To wish awakening for another is to participate in one's own awakening.

Where to go from here

Kirtan is not something to understand intellectually but to experience. If this session resonates, the invitation is to find a local kirtan gathering in your community, or to explore Krishna Das's ongoing schedule of satsangs and retreats. The Heart Space Digital Library (through the Kirtan Wallah Foundation) offers a growing library of recordings, webinars, and teachings. The Thursday Night Satsang continues regularly and can be found through the official channels listed below. Chanting with others is the most direct path into this practice, but even singing along with a recording—alone, in your car, in your kitchen—can open the door. The sacred names are waiting. The harmonium drone is already sounding. All that is required is the willingness to let your voice join in.

Kirtan is call-and-response chanting of sacred names and divine invocations, most often from Hindu devotional traditions. Unlike performance singing, kirtan is participatory and meditative; the repetition of sacred syllables over time shifts consciousness and opens the heart, working directly with the nervous system rather than through intellectual understanding.
The repetition of sacred names and syllables creates a sonic resonance that moves the mind beyond thinking into direct experience. The rhythm, harmony, and collective focus align individual consciousness with the deeper shared field; the chant becomes meditation in motion.
Bernie Glasman is described as a great being and end master who inspired Krishna Das's version of the Chalisa, a traditional devotional prayer. This version reframes the ancient form as a prayer to awakened hearts everywhere, honoring both the lineage and the evolution of devotional practice into contemporary settings.
The mantra means 'May all beings everywhere be happy and at peace.' It is a universal prayer of compassion that transcends any single religious tradition. The session closes with this to anchor the opening of the heart that has occurred through chanting into a concrete wish for the awakening and peace of all beings.
Yes. While the collective energy of a live gathering is powerful, chanting along with recordings can open the same doorway. The Heart Space Digital Library offers recordings and resources, and singing the sacred names alone—in your car, at home, or anywhere—can still shift consciousness and open the heart.
A satsang is a gathering for spiritual practice and communion, typically centered around chanting, prayer, and sometimes teaching. The Thursday Night Satsang includes multiple kirtan chants of varying intensity and theme, culminating in a traditional closing mantra that extends the awakening into a wish for universal peace.
Repetitive chanting, rhythm, and group focus move the nervous system out of the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state into the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state. The combination of breath, sound, and intention creates measurable shifts in brainwave patterns and opens pathways to deeper relaxation and clarity.
